DÉCAILLE

OVERVIEW

Taller and slimmer than the average Serenian, the Décaille are reminiscent of the elves in Germanic folklore – albeit without the haughty attitudes and willowy physique. Their ears are long and slender, ending in smooth points, and the Décaille are known for appearing young despite being hundreds of years old. Skin colours lean towards buttery pinks and creamy browns, with their most defining feature being the bright, colourful scales that dot their faces, arms, and legs. These scales can be of any colour – many holding one solid shade, but some have been known to feature multiple. This colour “bleeds” into the surrounding skin, creating a soft gradient between the skin and scale tones.

Their eyes can be any colour imaginable – far beyond that of Serenians – with many being multiple shades and gradients at once. Heterochromia is seen in at least five percent of the population. Natural hair colours are much like Serenians, featuring black, brown, red, and blonde – but dying their hair (either as one solid colour, or in patterns) is a common custom within the Décaille, and it is rare to spot one sporting their natural hair colour.

HOMELAND & CULTURE

Once from the vast rainforest country of Bosquet, since the King drove them from their home many centuries ago, the Décaille have been forced to find refuge elsewhere. The Craidden were the first to take them in, and many of the Décaille now call the Miellé Rainforest of Craidd their home. Bosquet’s capital was a monolithic tree known as Euphorie, which could house thousands of Décaille within its hollowed-out trunk. Yet it was tragically destroyed by the King during his invasion.

The Décaille are a respectful and determined folk, and despite being a mildly isolationist culture, they jump to meet new people and explore new places if given the chance. They have a deep interest in seeking out old and prized artefacts from the world before, especially literature long thought to be lost to the annals of time, with many becoming renowned treasure-hunters.

All Décaille believe that life is connected through a shared source, and that this source stems from great and powerful trees that they call Eika. In the broadest sense, they believe ancient gods reside within these trees, and every year swathes of Décaille make their pilgrimage to visit as many Eika as possible – the total number is unknown to all non-Décaille.

POWERS & ABILITIES

Each Décaille has a physical representation with the Eika – creatures bonded to their souls known as Fero. These creatures can appear in any form, often animalistic but with differing features, such as a bird-like fish, or an oddly spherical feline. The Fero are the same colour as their Décaille’s scales, and they can communicate with one another telepathically. It is believed that these Fero are what give the Décaille such strong links to magic.

Among all races, the Décaille show the greatest strength in the magical arts. Magic seems to be woven into their blood, and a Décaille child can cast spells no adult Serenian mage could.

Décaille are also incredibly agile, able to climb the tallest trees with amazing speed and grace. They are also stronger than the average Serenian, and are capable of running great distances without experiencing overexertion.
